South Polar Skua, Bremer Bay WA

April 8, 2012

Martin Cake just returned from a family camping trip to Bremer Bay, where he was fortunate to see and photograph an intermediate morph South Polar Skua.

The bird was first observed from the rocks east of Fisheries Beach on Saturday 7th, harassing the many Crested Terns in the area. Amazingly, early the next morning (Sun 8th) it was paddling sedately in the rocky cove at the south end of the main Bremer Beach allowing approach to within a few metres - see attached photo. The next afternoon it was seen again harassing terns at Fisheries.
